The Elegy (Retrospective)

When I died, I died alone

And strangers placed my body in the grave

And transients read the carvings on the stone

And vandals split the treasures of my home

When I died, I died alone

And every tear that fell was on my cheek

And every friend I knew, was with me in my sleep

When I died --
Vagrants found rats gnawing at my flesh
As I slumped myself at rest upon the sofa

And crimson still the stain upon my sleeve

When I put my soul at ease
-- I died alone.
